Negro Spirituals / Ella Sheppard

Ella Sheppard was a former slave and a founding member of the Fisk University Jubilee singers, the first group to sing publicly the songs of their ancestors: Negro Spirituals. The Jubilee Singers traveled throughout the South, the Northeast and Europe to raise money for Fisk University. They shared the sacred music of their parents and in the process touched the heart and soul of a nation. Ella Shepard and the Jubilee Singers helped to preserve Negro Spirituals for generations to come.

Ella Sheppard traveled with the Jubilee Singers for eleven years as a soprano, piano accompanist and Assistant Director. She was admired for her musical talent, her quiet, and her confident style of leadership.

Ella Shepard is portrayed by Joanna Maddox. Program is 45 minutes and includes popular Negro Spirituals. Suitable for grades 3rd - Adult.
